Dr. Akhil Jagadeesh

Dr. Jagadeesh earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Toronto in Toronto, Canada. He then went on to complete his DMD degree at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in Boston, Massachusetts, where he received first-rate training in all aspects of general dentistry. After graduating, he went into private practice and started Park West Dental in 1998.

In addition to being in private practice for many years, Dr. Jagadeesh has also been providing mobile dental care in nursing homes for over ten years. Taking care of elderly and handicapped patients has profoundly influenced his treatment philosophy and given him a great deal of insight into the needs of his own patients.

Through conservative treatment plans, a genuine devotion to his patients, and a unique combination of artistic skill and clinical/technical expertise, Dr. Jagadeesh has created thousands of healthy and beautiful smiles. He is a young dentist with a mastery of the most innovative and minimally invasive new dental procedures, and he is committed to expanding his professional knowledge through Continuing Education courses while also educating many physicians and nurses in the field of geriatric dentistry.

In his free time, Dr. Jagadeesh enjoys playing and watching hockey – he's a season ticket holder for the Chicago Blackhawks – and spending time with his wife and four children. He looks forward to getting to know you and your family, too!

Office Manager and Dental Assistant

Connie Urrutia is the office manager and dental assistant at Park West Dental. Connie has been with our office for over five years, and she's the one to thank for our office's smooth operation and scheduling systems. From assisting patients with dental insurance concerns to answering questions about dental treatment, Connie's years of managerial experience make visits to our office a comfortable and pleasant experience.

Connie is also a very talented dental assistant, helping Dr. Jagadeesh with many challenging dental procedures. Having received formal certification from the Illinois Dental Institute, she is trained to perform dental polishings during cleanings and place dental sealants.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some of the most commonly asked questions regarding dental treatments in our office and dentistry in general. Please feel free to contact us with any further questions or to schedule an appointment.

• My teeth don't hurt and I hate going to the dentist. Why do I need to come every six months?

  We dentists generally like to have our patients come in regularly for check ups and cleanings because it allows us to find problems when they are still small and easier to repair. Also, research is revealing a strong link between gum disease and systemic conditions like diabetes and heart disease. Along with eating right and exercising, routine teeth cleanings can help to control these diseases.

• Is it safe to go to the dentist while I'm pregnant?

  We strongly recommend that pregnant women have their teeth cleaned regularly throughout their pregnancy – ideally every three months. Gingivitis and gum disease are the most common dental concerns for women who are expecting, especially during the second to eighth months. Hormone fluctuations can cause gums to swell and bleed more easily, which makes them more susceptible to bacteria and infection. Some studies have also discovered a link between gum disease and low birth weight. More intensive dental work should be deferred until after the pregnancy, and x-rays should only be taken in an emergency situation.

• What is the difference between a deep cleaning and a regular cleaning?

  Dr. Jagadeesh usually recommends a deep cleaning for patients with moderate to severe gum disease. A deep cleaning involves the thorough scaling of areas below the gum line where bacteria, plaque and tartar reside. A local anesthetic is used and the mouth is cleaned one half at a time. A regular cleaning is performed without the use of local anesthetic and the entire mouth is done in one visit.

• I really want to whiten my teeth, but will it damage them?

  There is over 20 years of research which has shown there to be no long term structural damage or changes to your teeth. The most common side effect of whitening is tooth sensitivity, but this is temporary and goes away once the procedure is finished.

• What's the best option for replacing my missing teeth?

  While every situation is different, dental implants are usually the best option for tooth replacement. Dental implants allow teeth to be replaced without involving other healthy teeth. They are also permanent, which means they'll look and feel like natural teeth Implants, unlike other options, can even last a lifetime without needing replacement. • Do you treat elderly and disabled patients?

  Yes we do. In fact, Dr. Jagadeesh has years of experience in treating nursing home patients and makes regular visits to nursing homes to provide elderly and disabled patients with comprehensive dental care.
